I feel that the period of time between you deciding you want a baby and the baby’s first birthday is a time of the greatest and most emotional changes in your life. Whatever stage you are at now you feel different from how you felt last week and it is different from how you will feel next week. Just as you find solutions to one problem, another one pops up, doesn’t it?
In many ways we drown in information with ready access to the Internet and Google, Forums on every mother and Baby site, magazine online and offline, books on every topic under the sun and of course your friends and fellow mums from your antenatal or NCT group.
NLP for New Mums is not another book on being a new mum and it doesn’t give advice about being a mum, what to do or not do. It introduces you to the concepts, tools and techniques of NLP (neuro linguistic programming) and makes it relevant to you at this life-stage by giving you examples you will be able to identify with.
Lots of new mums I see are confused and feel alone and isolated. They have left a busy and demanding job with plenty of contact with other women like them. Now they are at home with a vulnerable tiny baby and nothing in their life to date has prepared them for this. We all react differently to being alone. Sometimes it can be peaceful to be alone and have time to oneself can’t it? Being alone with a baby is not the same though because the baby has needs to be met and can be pretty insistent and loud. Not peaceful at all. The few hours when baby sleeps you want to get things done so you don’t feel you’ve achieved nothing all day. Then you feel tired, so tired.
NLP gives you tools and techniques so you can access resources you’d forgotten you had and particularly shows you how to feel calm and confident whenever you need to. The book shows you how to use a Time Line for goal setting and trust your own judgement in situations when you need to make important decisions about your birth or the baby.
